Biodiesel is an alternative fuel similar to conventional or 'fossil' diesel. Biodiesel can be produced from straight vegetable oil, animal oil/ fats, tallow and waste cooking oil. The process used to convert these oils to biodiesel is called transesterification.
Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from a variety of renewable oilbearing sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats. It has properties very similar to petroleum diesel but with several advantages. Technically, biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats which conform to ASTM D6751 specification (EN 14214 in Europe ) for use in diesel engines. Biodiesel can be used in its pure form (B 100) or blended with petroleum diesel.

How is biodiesel different from petroleum diesel?
Biodiesel is manufactured from renewable feedstock, which is animal or vegetable based, via a catalytic reaction known as transesterification. Petroleum diesel is a complex mixture of hydrocarbon molecules derived from petroleum crude oil extracted from natural sources that has taken million of years to from and of which there is a limited and diminishing supply. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a Biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression – ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications.
● Biodiesel is a domestically produced, clean-burning, renewable substitute for petroleum diesel. Using biodiesel as a vehicle fuel increases energy, improves air quality and the environment, and provides safety benefits.
● Using biodesel reduces emissions because carbon dioxide released from biodiesel combustan is offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed from growing soybeans or other feedstocks used to produce the fuel.
● Biodiesel improves fuel lubricity and raises the cetane number of the fuel. Diesel engines depend on the lubricity of the fuel to keep moving parts from wearing prematurely.
● Biodiesel causes far less damage than petroleum diesel if spilled or released to the environment. It is safer than petroleum diesel because it is less combustible.
● The flashpoint for biodiesel is higher than 130 C, compared with about 52 C for
petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is safe to handle, store, and transport.
